What is on the map
The map shows 5,730 colleges and universities. About a third are public, a third private nonprofit and a third private for-profit; 47% offer four-year or higher degrees, 25% are two-year colleges and 28% offer programs shorter than two years. Over half (56%) enroll fewer than 1,000 students, so a crowded area means many schools rather than many students. Use the filters for state, type, level, setting and size, click a dot for the school’s page, or search by name. For a walk-through, see how to use the map.
About this map
Locations, school type and level come from the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (IPEDS 2024-25 directory). Each dot is one school as listed in the directory, at its listed address; branch campuses that the Department lists as separate schools appear as separate dots, and online-only programs are not shown. The map does not rank or score schools. State shapes: U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line. How to use the map · All data sources.
